I want this to be a little encouragement for you. I felt really strongly that some of you—especially if you’ve just completed your mid-year review—might be feeling stuck or discouraged. If you’re in that post-review slump or just a slump in business, I wanted to be a voice of encouragement for you. You don’t have to stay stuck. So take a deep breath, grab a yummy drink, and let me pump you up a bit today.
I want to share a story from my business journey. Truthfully, I lived in “stuck” for a while—and it was defeating. It was boring. It was frustrating. I remember filling out planners and worksheets that asked questions like, “What makes you come alive?” or “What makes you happiest?”—and I didn’t even know how to answer. I lived in that uncertainty for a while, until one day I just got fed up.
At that point in business, I wasn’t loving what I was doing. It was fine—it was a blessing to my family—but I wasn’t excited about it. Eventually, I knew I needed to do something different to get me out of that place. So I signed up for a business retreat. And if I’m being totally honest, I wasn’t convinced it would actually change anything for me. I was skeptical. I’d seen all the promises of “this will change your life,” and I wasn’t sure I believed them. I wasn’t even sure if it could be true for me. But I decided it was worth the risk to hopefully get out of this frustrating rut.
I was tired of being stuck in a cycle of frustration and a lack of passion. So I made the decision: I’m not going to live in this mundane place anymore—it’s time to take a risk. I went to the retreat not knowing anyone, which in itself was uncomfortable. It took courage to spend several days and nights with people I’d never met. But here’s the cool part: one of my best business friends today is someone I met at that very first retreat.
I had to get uncomfortable. I had to do things I wasn’t used to doing. But when I left that retreat, I felt so much clarity. And here’s the twist: it turned out to be the wrong clarity. It wasn’t the final destination or the perfect solution—but it was still a huge shift. It gave me momentum, shifted my perspective and stirred something inside me.
That retreat was full of aha moments. And those moments led to more steps forward, more clarity, and eventually a major shift in direction. At the time, I was only offering full-service bookkeeping—which is not something I really offer now—but that season set the foundation for where I am today.
My personality really wrestled with the idea of change. I kept wondering, Is it okay to change? Is it okay to pivot and change your mind? I talk more about this in the first episode, but I think it came down to loyalty—this part of me that was afraid to shift directions, to change my mind, or to go back on what I’d said I was doing. But at the end of the day, I was determined. I was determined not to settle for a business I wasn’t passionate about. I wanted to find something that genuinely excited me.
Sometimes, it really is that simple. You hit a moment where you say, Okay. It’s time. That moment came for me at the retreat when I was just done. I was fed up and ready to make a change because what I was doing wasn’t working anymore. But I’ll be honest, there were times before that when I thought I was ready, but I really wasn’t. It takes a willingness to be uncomfortable. You have to be okay with stepping outside your comfort zone—whether that’s putting yourself out there, making new connections, or facing things you’ve been avoiding.
So if you’re feeling stuck, uninspired, overwhelmed, or even just a little lost, it’s time to do something different. It’s so much easier to show up and sell in your business when you’re passionate about what you’re offering. If you’re not feeling that passion right now, dig into that. What’s going on under the surface? What thoughts or fears are keeping you stuck?
It’s also so much easier to look at your numbers when you’re not afraid of them. If the thought of checking your numbers or opening QuickBooks fills you with dread, that’s a signal. Don’t avoid it—dig into it. Ask yourself what you’re really afraid of. Find where those feelings are coming from so you can move forward instead of staying stuck.
If you’re overwhelmed by your bookkeeping, or scared you’ll “break something” when you open QuickBooks, let’s do what it takes to move past that. I truly believe that while accounting has its complexities, the average business owner can understand the basics. You can make smart decisions. You can read reports and know what they mean.
Is it time to schedule your Finance Friday or block out time for this month’s bookkeeping? Is it time to join a program that helps you understand your numbers? Maybe it’s finally having that conversation with a CPA—without fear. Or maybe it’s time to attend a retreat or event that will connect you with others who can push you forward. Is it time to explore what truly excites you, pivot your offer, or launch that idea you’ve been sitting on?Whatever that next step is, I want to encourage you to take it. There is nothing worse than staying stuck. So let this be your push. I hope you leave this episode feeling excited and encouraged to do the next thing.
